The Board of Health is an autonomous Board charged with setting public health policy under which the Health Department operates. It is established in accordance with the provisions of N.J.S.A.26:3-1 et seq. and is provided for in Chapter 24 "Board of Health" in the Codebook of the Borough of Hopatcong. It consists of a seven-member board and two alternates appointed by the mayor with the advice and consent of the Council. The Board of Health must appoint a Health Officer and a Registrar of Vital Statistics. All appointees of the Board of Health shall be governed by the rules of the Board and subject to all laws, rules, and regulations governing said officers.

The Board enacts ordinances, and makes rules and regulations in the interest of protecting and improving public health in Hopatcong. Ordinances adopted by the Board of Health are contained in PART III BOARD OF HEALTH LEGISLATION of the Code of the Borough of Hopatcong (begins with chapter 245) The Ordinances address a variety of concerns such as; animals (248), food handling (255), nuisances (259), plumbing (266), rodents (270), sanitary code (274), sewerage disposal (278), smoke control (282), tobacco products (286), and water supply (290).

The Board of Health meets at 7:30 PM on the 4^th Wednesday of every month    ( except for 28 November, 19 December 2007 and 16 January 2008-reorganization) in the Health Department building adjacent to the municipal Building. The public is welcome and encouraged to attend.
