Help Prevent Litter
Litter isn’t just unsightly; litter detracts from the attractiveness of the Borough.
It lessens the image of Hopatcong in our eyes and the eyes of others. It hurts property values. Hopatcong is fortunate to have a very conscientious, hard working, effective Clean Communities Director, Steve Guerriero, and many volunteers who have "Adopted-a-Road or Area or Stream". Please consider being a volunteer to pick up litter in your area or your block.
Hopatcong is Your Home. Keep it Litter Free.
The Borough government is quite serious about preventing litter and apprehending those who litter. In addition to the use of regular Borough employees, the Borough utilizes community service workers, employs young people for litter cleanup during the summer, contracts with the Sussex County Association of Retarded Citizens (SCARC) for cleanups, and uses Sussex County prisoners through the Sheriff’s Work Assistance Program (SWAP).
The Borough will continue to use enforcement where necessary. Although warnings are issued and voluntary cooperation is sought, violators will be prosecuted and fines imposed. Improvement comes so much easier through compliance that comes from the heart.

Organizations that provide a minimum of ten workers can be compensated at a rate of $5.00 for every 2 hours/worker. For every 10 youth workers one adult supervisor must be provided. Grants will be limited to $5.00/worker. Hopatcong will provide all materials necessary for the cleanup.
If your group or organization is interested in taking part in a Borough clean up project, please call Steve Guerriero, Clean Communities Administrator at 973-770-1200.
Adopt a Clean Up Area
In conjunction with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection's Clean Communities Program, the Borough conducts an Adopt-A-Road, Adopt-An-Area, and Adopt-A-Stream program. Any individual, family or organization can participate.
The program had originally started with just the Adopt-A-Road program, but was expanded to clean vacant lots and to clean our streams.
