Recreation Coordinator / Sue Parichuk / 973-770-2701

Recreation Council Liaison / John Young / 973-770-1200

Recreation Com. Meets On the 2nd Tuesday each month at 8:00 pm in the Municipal Building.

The Recreation Commission consists of seven members appointed by the Mayor. Each member serves a five-year term. The Board elects a Chairperson, a Vice Chairperson, Secretary, and Treasurer. A Councilperson acts as a liaison to the Commission. A Recreation Aide/Scheduler assists with the implementation and planning of activities, maintenance and improvements. In addition, the Borough provides a Public Works employee for Recreation/Parks work. The Commission has several sub committees such as Summer Recreation Committee, Fields Committee, and Finance Committee. The Recreation Commission was created in December 1969 by Borough ordinance (See Article One of Chapter 5 "Board of Recreation Commissioners" of the Code Of the Borough of Hopatcong,) pursuant to N.J.S.A. 40:12-1 et seq. with the first commissioners being appointed in 1970. The Recreation Commission is the central agency for all recreational organizations in the Borough and coordinates the fields and parks for their uses. The Recreation Commission is charged with providing activities for all residents in the Borough.

The Commission has such powers and can receive such financial aid as shall be authorized by N.J.S.A. 40:12-1 to 40:12-15, inclusive, except that the Commission shall not acquire lands for public playgrounds and recreation places by purchase, lease or condemnation unless the Mayor and Council shall have first appropriated a sum sufficient for this purpose. The Commission, within its discretion, may annually allocate all or a portion of its annual appropriation, as approved by the Mayor and Council in the municipal budget, to assist various nonprofit recreational organizations in providing recreational activities to Borough residents. Such assistance may be provided in the form of purchase of equipment or supplies or payment to outside vendors for services provided.  As a condition precedent to the allocation of such funds, each such nonprofit recreational organization, receiving more than $500 in any calendar year shall annually provide to the Board a financial report listing the general sources of all income and general expenses by categories as well as all other resources owned or held by said organization. Each such financial report shall be signed and certified by the chief officer and the treasurer of the organization. No nonprofit recreational organization shall be eligible to receive any allocation from the Board until such time as the financial report has been received.

The Commission has full control of all lands acquired or leased by the Borough and designated by the Mayor and Council as a playground or recreation place and adopts suitable rules, regulations and bylaws for the use thereof and the conduct of all persons while on or using the same.
