Tax Collector Duties:
The Tax Collector is responsible for the collection of Property Taxes.
The Tax Collector is also the Tax Search Official.
The Hopatcong Tax Collector's office acts as Central Cashier, collecting fees and payments from all other departments, except for the court.
Fire Prevention / Carbon Monoxide inspection applications must also be acquired from the Tax Collector's office.
Property Taxes are Due Quarterly. February 1, May 1, August 1 & November 1.

Interest is Charged at 8% for the First $1,500.00 and 18% Over $1,500.00.

The Tax Sale for 2010 delinquent property taxes / municipal charges will be held at the Municipal Building on October 13, 2011.
The list of properties will be advertised in the New Jersey Herald on Fridays,
The Tax Sale is an option bidding process for the Lien on the property.
The Successful bidder must make payment before the close of the sale in guaranteed funds.
Subsequent delinquent taxes can be paid by the Lien Holder, to be added to the Lien.
Being a lien holder does not give you any rights to that property, until you have successfully foreclosed on said property.
Any property liens not bid on by outside bidders, are automatically struck off
Veteran / Widow of a Veteran - Qualified United States Veterans who served in time of war
Senior Citizen/Disabled Persons/Surviving Spouse - Qualified persons over 65 years of age
Applications for any of the above deductions can be obtained from the Tax Assessor's office.

There is a 6% Year End Penalty Attached to Any Delinquencies Over $10,000, at the End

Tax Sale Information
Bidding starts at 18% interest on the Tax Sale Amount and works down to 0%. Premimus are accepted in $100.00 increments.
The successful bidder then becomes the Lien Holder.
The lien holder must file an Affidavit of payment in the Collector's office for each subsequent payment made. No action can be taken by the lien holder until after 2 years, provided the lien holder has paid subsequent taxes. The lien holder can then begin foreclosure action.
