HOPATCONG ENVIRONMENTAL COMMISSION

The meeting of the Hopatcong
Environmental Commission was opened by Mary Takacs with a statement that this
meeting is held in accordance with the Open Public Meetings Act, N.J.S.A.
10:4-1 et seq., annual notice having been forwarded to The New Jersey Herald,
The Daily Record and The News-Leader and posted on the bulletin board
maintained in the Municipal Building for public announcements.

APPROVAL OF THE APRIL 23,
2003 MINUTES
Steve Guerriero made a motion
to approve the April 23, 2003 minutes.
Elizabeth Mauro seconded the motion and all were in favor.
CHAIRPERSON’S REPORT
Council Member, Marty
Janowski is attending the Jefferson Township Meeting with other municipalities.
There will be three NJDEP
workshops: May 29, 2003

18, 2003
Morris Land Conservancy is
asking for contributions to carry on their work.
Byram Township has shared
their comments to the DEP concerning Governor McGreevey’s Smart Growth
Plan. Mary Takacs has the paperwork if
anyone wishes to review it.
There is a notice from the
Delaware River Basin Commission, on the docket, scheduling public hearings.
Mary Takacs has a copy of a
letter sent by John Ruschke at Hatch Mott MacDonald informing the Association
of NJ Environmental Commissions that he sent two copies of a Smart Growth
Planning Grant application.
There is a letter from the
Office of Governor applauding Hopatcong’s efforts that protect and preserve the
New Jersey environment and to provide safe drinking water.
HAZMAT - May 15, 2003 -
Underground storage tank oil fuel spill and May 16, 2003 - The removal of
underground storage tank, cleanup in progress.
The Commission received a
Letter of Interpretation for individual transition area waiver on Block
50406 Lot 1
Mary Takacs said that all the
Board Members should read the Resource Paper from ANJEC regarding Septic System
Management for Clean Water.
There is a letter to Mayor
and Council asking for more advertisement of our ordinance condemning litter.
Earth Day at Durban Avenue
School was a big success.
Flowers and shrubbery were
purchased at Nester’s Greenhouse for planting on Borough grounds and
properties.
STATUS REPORTS
Open Space - Elizabeth Mauro reported there was no meeting for
Open Space.
Water Testing - Connie Janowski reported the water is testing well.
Park - Steve Guerriero reported that the forms are made
for the cement work at Maxim Glenn.
Steve also reported that he received authorization to purchase
rhododendrons and the Gazebo has been stained and cleaned up. Steve said there was some sort of electrical
problem with the fountain. Steve also
announced that grass was replanted at the park.
Budget - Bernice Gleason handed out copies of the spending
budget.
GIS PRESENTATION - GUEST
SPEAKER
Dave from the Sussex County
GIS was the guest speaker for the Environmental Commission tonight. The roll of the Office of GIS is to
coordinate all GIS activities that go on throughout the county. GIS stands for Geographic Information
Systems and can be used for global and local problems. GIS is a computer base system that links
electronic or digital maps with a database.
