SAFETY TIPS:

1) Keep away from strangers

2) Walk against traffic.  Travel a safe route that has been previously discussed with parents- no short cuts or alleys.  Avoid gangs.  Know safety houses in your neighborhood.

 3) Get an attitude by walking tall and with confidence.  Notice what’s happening around you.  Use your “take charge” voice.  It is your best weapon.

 4) Whenever you need help, ask a police officer, teacher, store clerk, neighbor, church leader, grandma or a mother with small children.

 5) Trust the buddy system.  Stick with others, especially when you visit public restrooms.

 6) Know that grown-ups don't need help from kids.  They should ask another grown-up.  If an adult asks for help, keep moving.  Tell them you'll send help.

 7) Never get in a car or enter someone's home without your parent's per mission.

 8) Stay where it's crowded and well lit -- and away from dark and lonely places.

 9) Never stay in an elevator or restroom with a suspicious person.  Get out fast.

 10) Don't show the key to your house.

11) If you suspect someone who drives away, write down the license plate number, the type and color of car, and what the person looks like.  If you don't have a paper and pencil, scratch it in the dirt, or use a rock on the sidewalk.  Tell a trusted adult.

 12) If someone stops and talks to you, take two steps back.

 13) If you suspect someone is following you, suddenly go back the way you came.  If he follows you, go to the nearest busy, well lit place and ask a trusted adult for help or call your parents.  If you're on a quiet street, knock on a door for help.

 14) If you are ever grabbed by an adult, yell, "No!  This is not my parent!" Make a big scene, pretend to faint, scream, be sick, fake an asthma attack, or act crazy.  You can't overpower a large man, or someone with a weapon.  Instead, run and scream!
